Carbon County (official Web site www.co.carbon.mt.us) has a population of around 10,000 — the exact figure was 9,552 at the 2000 census. Its large area (2,062 square miles) means it really is wide open country. With only five people per square mile, there's lots of space available for recreation, including parts of Custer National Forest, Gallatin National Forest, Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, and other publicly-owned lands, including state and BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land.
