Ebb and Flow

by Craig Beam
This is the time of year when I get all excited about the fishing season. For the last few years, it's been happening by now. March browns, baetis, caddis and early stone flies. Sometimes the stones are crawling all over what's left of the winter snow. Not this year, it seems. We're a bit behind.

Ferguson to Take Dinner Attendees on "A Hero's Journey"

In 1998, Red Lodge author Gary Ferguson spent several months at the Aspen Achievement Academy, which designs what he describes as a "therapeutic and compassionate wilderness experience" for troubled teens. The following year, his book, Shouting at the Sky, introduced readers to a number of the young people whose anger, fear, sadness and myriad negative emotions, taken to the extreme, Ferguson shared in a remote Utah desert. As the teens, to varying degrees, met the challenges of self-sufficiency in the wild, pride, camaraderie and healing also slowly emerged. Clearly, as the author put it, nature exerts a powerful source of healing, even for those who don't want to be there.

Beer Snob: Skip the Cheap Stuff

by Gary Robson
The idea of Randy's "Cheapskate Wine Snob" column makes a lot of sense. Wine can be frightfully expensive. The difference in price between the cheapest and most expensive bottles in a store can be a factor of 50 (a $5 bottle vs. a $250 bottle) or even more. If you want to enjoy good wine, but you just can't shell out a hundred dollars or more, you need to be able to root around for the bargains.

Cheapskate Wine Snob: Horticulturally Challenged

by Randy Tracy
It's May in Montana. "Ah, Spring," we say, trying to ignore the fact that the rest of the country left Spring behind a month and a half ago, and they are now chanting "Sumer is icumen in, Lhude sing cuccu." Here in Montana, we say, "It's May, for crying out loud. If we get another foot of snow, 'ya darn right I'll be Cuckoo."

Stop and Think: Giving Locals a Chance to Bid

by Gary Robson
I know there are people in Carbon County who don't like the "buy local" concept. Some feel that whatever they're looking for will always be more expensive here. Some just like shopping in Billings or Cody. But we all know that the economy here isn't particularly robust right now, and deep in our hearts we all care about this place we live in--otherwise why would we be living here?
