July 2008 Local Rag

A Quick Guide to Rodeo Events

Since the Red Lodge Home of Champions Rodeo is a PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) sanctioned event, there are seven core events. Cowboys in the Big Sky Circuit--or those hoping for a shot at the finals--can compete here, and their winnings count toward season and career totals.

Even Non-Bikers have Fun at Iron Horse Rodeo!

One of the highlights of the Beartooth Rally is the Iron Horse Rodeo. Held at the Carbon County Fairgrounds on Sunday, July 20, it gives bikers a chance to compete for $1,000 in cash & prizes and gives spectators a good, hearty laugh.

Gary and the Wild Horses

by Gary Robson
Like any PRCA-sanctioned event, the Home of Champions Rodeo draws contestants from all over the U.S. and Canada. There are two events, though, that are all about the locals: mutton busting and the wild horse race. A few years ago, a fellow came into the bookstore and asked me if I'd be interested in joining his team.

Keeping the Cowboys Safe & Healthy

The theme for this year's Home of Champions Rodeo is "There's Lotsa Work Behind the Show." We'd like to take a little bit of time to talk about some of the people who risk life and limb in the arena with no chance of taking home a shiny new buckle. They may look like they're just out there for entertainment, but these are the people who keep the cowboys alive.

Red Lodge Loves a Parade!

When you think about the big local events in July, the first things that come to mind are the Home of Champions Rodeo and the Beartooth Rally/Iron Horse Rodeo. The Beartooth Rally is big, all right, and there are certainly locals involved, but it's mostly an out-of-town event. If you hit the street dances, you're not going to find a lot of Carbon County residents. Similarly, the Rodeo is a big event, but most of the participants are out-of-towners.

The Linderman Award

The rodeo here in Red Lodge is called the "Home of Champions," because there have been some amazing rodeo stars from here. The Greenough family, with Turk, Alice, Marge, and Deb; Bill Smith (the record books say he was from Cody, but we know where he spent his time); and Bud & Bill Linderman. All made their marks on rodeo nationally. Alice and Marge Greenough are in the Cowgirl Hall of Fame, and all five men are in the Cowboy Hall of Fame. Bud, Turk, and Bill each won three bronc-riding titles. Deb qualified for the National Finals Rodeo 13 times and was World Bareback Champion in 1993.

The Social Cost of Gasoline Consumption (student essay)

by Meredith Porth
With the prices of gasoline on the rise, many consumers feel that they are being forced to pay far more than gasoline is truly worth. As of December 31 of 2007, the national average cost of a gallon of gasoline was $3.053. To many Americans, this price seems outrageous, but the real question is: should the price of gasoline be even higher?

Beer Snob: Bringing Back Porter

by Gary Robson
Once upon a time, almost 300 years ago, beer was produced mainly in pubs and by homebrewers (and monasteries, but that's a subject for a future article). A large brewery might supply a whole town and the surrounding area. The most popular beer styles in England, Ireland, and Scotland were brown ales.

Cooking with John: July in Red Lodge

by John Overton
When it comes to cooking, July starts with the 4th. Fireworks, parades, rodeo; who has time to cook? Western outdoor entertaining requires nothing more than a barbecue grill and a warm smile. The parade--and of course, the rodeo--are very western, and western means barbecue. I ran across the following recipe in Luckenbach, Texas (with Waylon, Willie, and the Boys).

Get Your Buns Outside: Hiker/Biker Gear

by Marci Dye
What do hikers and bikers have in common? Hmmm... It seems there are two sides to that fence, and it's a pretty tall fence. The hiker seeks out solitude and quiet and finds nothing more beautiful than wildflowers and mountain lakes. The biker seeks out the fast-paced fun social gatherings, and takes in one beautiful bike after another. What could these two possibly have in common? GEAR! And really cool gear at that!

The Scene, by Jeanne: Art in the Beartooths - July 26

by Jeanne Thomas
It's all happening at the Carbon County Arts Guild. I do believe it; I do believe it's true! And so will you, if you have the good fortune to cross the threshold of the Depot Gallery and Carbon County Arts Guild at 11 West 8th Street on the north end of Red Lodge, right across from the Beartooth Market. The Gallery and Guild headquarters shares the block with the beautiful Lions Park and gazebo, the scene of many of the Guild's events and celebrations of the arts, including Art in the Beartooths on July 26th.
