A few words with the Red Lodge Lodging Association
by Gary Robson
Probably the single group of businesses most affected by the current Beartooth Rally hoopla is represented by the Red Lodge Lodging Association. The Local Rag sat down with a group of representatives from the Lodging Association to see what they thought of the Rally.

Beer Snob:
A Tribute to Session Beers
by Gary Robson
Last week, I was enjoying a glass of Stillwater Rye at Montana Brewing Company, and found myself thinking, "I'd better switch to a different beer." Why would I find myself wanting to switch to something different, when I'm drinking a perfectly fine beer?

If you enjoy an after-dinner brandy or cognac, there are some alternatives you may wish to explore.
For a number of years, I've been reading about the remarkable fruit brandies and grappa produced by Clear Creek Distillery in Portland, Oregon. They go about it in the classical style; producing a wine from the pure fruit, and then distilling it into brandy with no other adulterants. The result is a line of brandies and grappa that rival the best that Europe produces.

Ah, fall is in the air. And with fall comes that dreaded phrase all kids hate to hear: it's time to head back to school. Now as a new parent, that phrase has a whole new meaning. Free afternoons! Whoohoo! No, no, no, that's not why I look forward to my son's school days. I'm excited for him to get an education--no, really!

Sometimes it's hard to be inspired with my photography, I go through moods. I'm sure everybody does. There are definite favorite subjects of mine, but sometimes it's good to have something for guidance. One of the ways I do this is to give myself an assignment.

Outlines and Shading
by Jody De Carlo
Old school, new school, realistic, abstract, cartoon, lettering, portraits, wildlife, scenery, tribal--in color, blacks, or grays--tattooists are expected to do it all. While it's true that anyone can trace a line, not just anyone can trace a line (actually many lines) at a steady speed with the same amount of pressure the entire time, sensing how much it takes to get to the second layer of skin. A canvas of skin varies as much as people do.

Respect and diversity are two of the themes that have come up a lot in interviews and letters to the editor regarding the Beartooth Rally. Quite a few people have mentioned that we need to draw more diversity into town, and that we need to respect the different groups we have. But how about looking not only at racial diversity, but at age and wealth diversity?

About Town:
The Red Lodge Hospital Auxiliary
by Corey Thompson
A couple of years ago my husband and I were camping in the West Fork when I awoke to him screaming in pain. Bear? Moose? Porcupine? No, it was some sort of large moth that had lodged itself into his inner ear! We tried everything we could think of to get it out, but ended up in the emergency room at the Beartooth Hospital in Red Lodge where it was calmly and expertly removed. The staff was kind enough to assure us that this was not an extraordinary event, and this type of extraction occurred more frequently than you'd think.

District 9 is a science fiction movie, all the way. But it's not your a stereotypical sci-fi movie, not at all. It has no phasers, no epic space battles, no Death Stars, none of that. It does, however, use the central theme used throughout the high majority of sci-fi films; Aliens. And these aren't the little green men with abnormally large heads and big black anime eyes; these are well thought out, science-fictiony aliens you'd expect from a knowledgeable sci-fi author.
