October 2010 Local Rag

A Word from the Local Rag's New Alien Intern

by Bethany George
Hello, my name is Bethany George and I'm a senior at Red Lodge High School. Because of my interest in journalism, interning at the Local Rag is a dream come true. However, I have a strange suspicion that's not why I was hired...

Bats

by Barb Pitman
Bats in the Beartooths? Yes, there are at least eight species in the Beartooth Mountains, and eleven--possibly twelve--species are present in the Pryor Mountains. There are over 1,100 species worldwide and bats occupy every continent except Antarctica. Some of our bats are very common, such as the little brown myotis, the most common bat in Montana, and possibly in the United States. Others, such as the pallid, spotted, and Townsend's big-eared bat, are quite rare. All three of these species occur in the Pryors.

March of Dimes, October Art Fest Benefit at the Beartooth Gallery

Jeff Hamm and Harry Koyama both were painting live on October first and second at the Beartooth Gallery's "October Art Fest", which was a first-time, and hopefully annual, benefit for the March of Dimes. It is always exciting to see artists at work, and this year seventeen artists also participated in a "paint out" at Fishtail Basin Ranch. Their freshly created work was auctioned off on Saturday evening and customers made off with an amazing amount of world class art by prominent artists at incredible prices.

Midterm Elections Carbon County 2010

by Gary Robson
As our regular readers already know, the Local Rag doesn't do political coverage like other periodicals. It's called the Local Rag for a reason: we're all about Carbon County. We interviewed the candidates for Justice of the Peace before the primary election, and for the other contested county and state races in this month's issue.

What's On Your Shuffle List?

Kids these days are always hanging around with earbuds in their ears, and if you get close, you can almost tell what they're listening to. It's enough to drive an old fart like the Rag's intrepid editor crazy. So we sent our new intern, Bethany (see article below) out to find out what's going on. She collared a collection of students and asked each of them, "what are the next five songs in your shuffle or playlist?"

Cheapskate Wine Snob: Rioja and Tapas

by Randy Tracy
Summer came and went -- it was glorious as always -- and now the seasonal change hits my food and wine preferences. In hot weather, I love a cold pasta salad and a bottle of Vinho Verde, but when the air chills and the leaves turn to gold, I yearn for hearty fare: roasted meats, fiery and intense red wines, pots of flaming chili with cornbread, big, strong, rich flavors.

Jeff the Nature Guy: The Creepy Crawlies

by Jeff Ewelt
Oh, how I love the fall! Cooler temps, beautiful leaves and of course, Halloween. I have always loved this holiday. It's an excuse to dress goofy and ask for candy. I mean really, can it get any better? And now that I have my own little guy, I get all the leftover candy. All right! Besides the sweet benefits of Halloween, I have always loved the lore and myths this time of year brings. This is the time of year that the animal underdogs can shine their brightest.

Heirloom Recipes: An End-of-Summer Feast

by Jay West
Last Sunday, we had an end of the summer meal. The sweet corn crop is producing now. If you're in Red Lodge and don't get out much, at least go to the Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings. Bert, my neighbor up the street, has a bumper crop of cucumbers this summer. Wild-caught Alaskan salmon is showing up in the stores. These combined to make a memorable dinner last Sunday. Everybody asked for the recipes, so here they are.

The Scene, by Jeanne: Beartooth Gallery: Visions of the West

by Jeanne Thomas
Beartooth Gallery owners and directors Bob Streitmatter and Robin Galloway are long-time Red Lodge residents and fans. They have lived here since 1993 and opened their Gallery early this year. They were looking for what the town would appreciate having and finally settled on this artistic enterprise as a way of showcasing and furthering the careers of the multitude of talented regional artists.

Slightly Out of Focus: Fall Photography

by Gene Rodman
I always enjoy fall. Even though we may have gotten a snowstorm in September, we are usually guaranteed nice weather until the trees have dropped their leaves and the Halloween candy has been eaten. Fall is the most colorful time of year for photographing. Last year we got cheated on fall colors when there was a hard freeze just as the trees were starting to change.

Green Scene: Fracking

by Clare Witcomb
In last month's Local Rag I wrote about the problems of coal ash storage being faced by the citizens of the Colstrip area. This month I am going to write about a process used by the natural gas industry called fracking, or hydraulic fracturing.

About Town: Medical Marijuana

by Corey Thompson
Medical marijuana was legalized by the Montana state legislature in 2004. Since then 25,000 patients have received a medical marijuana card, which has a doctor?s recommendation that marijuana can be helpful for their medical condition. Clearly medical marijuana is an exploding phenomenon that is here to stay. Why?
