Married 65 years.
This month, Dan and Marklynn (known as Mark to her friends) will be celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary. When they met, Mark was 19 years old, and Dan was an English teacher who was working as a truant officer. Dan stopped at the house to check up on Mark's younger sister when Mark was giving a piano lesson. She was fresh in from a ride, wearing pigtails, riding boots, and jodhpurs. A week later, Dan asked her out to a movie. Initially, her father said no, because Dan was too old for her, but he soon capitulated and the rest is history!
Married 61 years.
When we asked Bob how he and Ruth met, he was quick to respond, "I lived with her sister." Ruth rolled her eyes and said, "that was a lot more shocking 50 years ago." The actual story is fairly tame: When Bob was attending Southern Oregon University, living space was at a premium, so he rented a room from Ruth's sister and her husband. He met Ruth, and the rest was history. So what's the secret to 61 years of happy marriage? According to Ruth, it's marrying someone with a sense of humor.

Ernie and Marge were both members of a group called the "Seattle Mountaineers," although they'd never really met. The group assembled at the Snoqualmie Ski Lodge for a New Years' party as 1950 was drawing to a close. At midnight, a member made up with gray hair and beard to represent the old year came down the stairs with Baby New Year, a pretty 16-year-old girl named Margie wearing a diaper and a sash (we're not completely clear on what the rest of the outfit was). Ernie was smitten, and asked her out right away. They'd planned to marry when he got his first permanent posting in the military, but moved the wedding up after Ernie was thrown from a horse, breaking five vertebrae and his pelvis.
Married 50 years.
When Eldon was teaching industrial arts in Texas, he was hunting for a good place to live. He found an apartment being vacated by an art teacher named Yvonne, and they spent some time chatting as she moved out and he moved in. He invited her to ride along the next day when he went to Houston for school supplies, and ended up asking her on a date. They went to a movie, where Eldon locked his keys in the car. He still remembers struggling to unlock the car with a borrowed coat hanger as Yvonne stood in a ditch and laughed at him. They ended up breaking the wing window to get in and get home.
Married 47 years.
Tom and Carolyn were both college students that arranged summer jobs in Cooke City. "There were two guys and about thirty girls," Tom recalled. He was at work in the gas station, watching a particular group of three girls walk by outside, when they eventually came inside. One of the girls walked up to him and said, "My name is Carolyn and I have the cutest legs in Cooke City." Apparently, she was right, because Tom was hooked. When we confirmed the story with her, she said, "There were only two eligible guys in town--I had to stake my claim fast."
