Each December, the Local Rag commissions a new piece of custom artwork for our cover.
Our tradition began in 2007, when Billings artist Benny Gillet created an entry for the Christmas Stroll poster contest, only to discover that there was no contest that year. We loved his artwork, and purchased it for the Local Rag.
Last year's cover was done by Red Lodge artist Dolly Stuber (nee Frerichs). The original artwork for all three covers is on display at Red Lodge Books this month.
This year, we decided to go to Red Lodge High School to search for artists. Our first stop at the school, of course, was with Art Teacher Extraordinaire Mike Kosorok.
Mike agreed to talk with his students and find someone interested in doing our cover art. The masterpiece on the front cover, as it turns out, came from a student that isn't even taking art from Mike this semester, a Junior named Mariah Greathouse. Mike approached her in Algebra class.
"Mariah is tremendously talented," Mike told us. "Especially with lettering. She has a future in commercial or graphic arts if she chooses to pursue it."
Mariah's picture was inspired by the snow at sunrise. "I love the weather around here," she said. The lettering and outlines are pen & ink, and the background is watercolor.
She's not sure whether she's going to pursue art as a career, but perhaps the check we wrote her from the Local Rag to buy this piece will inspire her further!
