Regular Local Rag Columns

About Town

Corey's random musings, polls, surveys, interviews, and more about living in and around Red Lodge.

AFK for Life

Douglas Robson and various co-authors (mostly Ethan McDowell) brought you reviews of the latest, greatest video games, both console and PC. "AFK" is an abbreviation for "Away From Keyboard," used frequently in statements like "I'll be AFK for a while," which usually means a phone call, bathroom break, or food.

Doug is no longer doing AFK for Life columns, focusing instead on movie reviews in his new column, Off the Reel.

Beartooth Guru

Baba Ram Baba, the Beartooth Guru, answers your questions and shares his wisdom--peacefully and blissfully, of course--from somewhere high in the Beartooth Mountains.

Beer Snob

It may make sense for the "wine snob" to be a cheapskate, but when the price of a really good beer is usually less than twice the price of a crummy cheap beer, it doesn't pay to be cheap. Gary talks about beer styles, history, brands, and whatever else comes into his head.

Cheapskate Wine Snob

Randy Tracy is the Local Rag's resident cheapskate wine snob. His Scottish heritage and frugal ways certainly qualify him as a cheapskate. Frankly, we've never quite figured out what qualifies him as a wine snob, but we like his writing. He's recommended some pretty good wines in his time, too.

Cooking with John

John Overton is the Local Rag's ombudsman in addition to writing this column. His background in the catering business and eclectic taste in foods usually provide us with a good selection of recipes, and he's showed us how to cook everything from groundhogs to Spaghetti alla Carbona.

Get Your Buns Outside

Marci Dye spends her days at Sylvan Peak buying and selling outdoor gear. As soon as she can escape, she likes to do just what she's encouraging us to do: get outside and hike, climb, float, slide, glide, or just kick back under a tree. Her columns include everything from good local destinations to lists of the gear to wear when you go there.

Green Scene

Clare is deeply entrenched in the world of green (gardening and growing) and the world of Green (environmental consciousness). Her columns vary in content, but focus on our relationship with our environment and this wonderful green place that we call Carbon County.

Heirloom Recipes

Jay West has a history around Red Lodge, a love of food, and a colorful collection of Scandinavian forbears. All of this combines to build Heirloom Recipes, which is a column that mixes family stories with great recipes.

Jeff the Nature Guy

Jeff Ewelt of the Beartooth Nature Center shares stories of amazing animals (and his son, too). And yes, that's a vulture on his head in that picture!

Montana Fashion

Fashion is different here. Ryan Sankey guides us through clothes that are practical AND good-looking.

Slightly Out of Focus

Technobabble

These days even the most hardcore Luddite comes face-to-face with technology at every turn. This irregular column talks about how technology affects our everyday lives--sometimes in not-so-obvious ways.

The Scene, by Jeanne

Jeanne Thomas is a real patron of the performing arts. She has her serious side, promoting the arts around Red Lodge and working to create our own performing arts center; and her lighter side, working as Pippi the Clown. Both sides of Jeanne show in "The Scene," which explores the arts in and around Red Lodge.
