The summer season is winding down, and so is our tattoo season. Despite their economic woes, people still manage to come up with the money for a new tattoo or piercing. Small, local shows were a bit slower than usual, but other areas not affected by job losses and home foreclosures, were the same as previous years. Two reasons for this are our reputation or large clientele base, and another reason is that body art is addicting.

Old school, new school, realistic, abstract, cartoon, lettering, portraits, wildlife, scenery, tribal--in color, blacks, or grays--tattooists are expected to do it all. While it's true that anyone can trace a line, not just anyone can trace a line (actually many lines) at a steady speed with the same amount of pressure the entire time, sensing how much it takes to get to the second layer of skin. A canvas of skin varies as much as people do.

Working for a decade in the tattoo and body piercing industry, I have learned a great deal about skin and art--which has prompted me to document and write, for there is much to consider and a lot that gets overlooked. While people are much more knowledgeable about tattoos and piercings than they were just five years ago, I still meet many people who don't know where to begin when it comes to shopping for a tattoo or piercing. Deciding what to get and where to put it is only part of the challenge, yet it is often the only thing many people consider. I can always spot someone whose only tattoo research has been watching Miami Ink. Television shows are just not "reality."
