Stop and Think

These are Editor-in-Chief Gary Robson's musings and editorials. They cover any topic under the sun.

Sep 2010: A Few Words from the Editor

by Gary Robson
Living in a town like Red Lodge brings both expected and unexpected benefits. About 18 months after moving to Montana, I was diagnosed with lymphoma. I had lost both of my parents in the prior year, and hadn't really had time to develop a support network of friends.

Jun 2010: Trivializing Atrocity

by Gary Robson
While channel-surfing on TV the other day, I came across Jon Stewart running a collage of videos where Fox News' Glenn Beck was comparing Barack Obama and the Democrats to Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. I'd like to call this an isolated incident, but it isn't. The news is full of conservative pundits, commentators, and bloggers comparing our president to Hitler.

Sep 2009: Respect and Diversity

by Gary Robson
Respect and diversity are two of the themes that have come up a lot in interviews and letters to the editor regarding the Beartooth Rally. Quite a few people have mentioned that we need to draw more diversity into town, and that we need to respect the different groups we have. But how about looking not only at racial diversity, but at age and wealth diversity?

Sep 2008: Stuff Happens: Feeling Lucky?

by Corey Thompson
Condolences to those five households who lost their Senia Creek cabins. Aside from them, how can experiencing a wildfire ever be considered lucky? Of course it cannot, exactly, but if a fire like the Cascade Fire has to occur, then Red Lodge is indeed lucky.

Jun 2008: Wolves: Why Delisting is Necessary

by Gary Robson
There's not much middle ground when it comes to wolves, but there are plenty of extreme views. Far to one side are the wolf-lovers who seem to feel that wolves are more important than people. Far to the other side are the wolf-haters (represented by the "Wolves: Government Sponsored Terrorists" bumper sticker I saw in Roscoe last night) who seem to want the species eradicated by any means possible.

May 2008: Giving Locals a Chance to Bid

by Gary Robson
I know there are people in Carbon County who don't like the "buy local" concept. Some feel that whatever they're looking for will always be more expensive here. Some just like shopping in Billings or Cody. But we all know that the economy here isn't particularly robust right now, and deep in our hearts we all care about this place we live in--otherwise why would we be living here?

Feb 2008: Working Together is the Only Solution

by Gary Robson
On Tuesday, January 15, a strong wind blowing toward the northwest picked up dust exposed by the construction crews working on the new Red Lodge High School site. The dust, remnants of the coal mine slack pile under the site, blanketed the Nature Center next door. "Everything was filthy, dirty, black snow," Vaughn Clutter, President of the Nature Center Board, told me. "We moved all of the raptors into the barn right away."

Jan 2008: What's All This About Pamida, Anyway?

by Gary Robson
On the personals page in the last issue of the Rag, I included a little snippet about the possibility of a Pamida coming to town (said snippet is:"They're working on plans to open a Pamida store in Red Lodge. Quick! Fire off a letter or make a phone call to all of the City and County officials and tell them we don't want it here. Let's nip this in the bud!").

Jan 2008: Responses to Last Month's Editoria

Well, I wanted responses to my editorial last month regarding the music playing downtown, and by golly, I got them. Most of the people who contacted me weren't interested in writing letters; they just wanted to give me a quick thumbs-up or thumbs-down on the music. I got 5 responses disagreeing with me and 33 agreeing.

Dec 2007: The Not-So-Great Mall of Red Lodge

by Gary Robson
Did you notice something different about downtown Red Lodge this summer? Something that provides our quiet little mountain town with all the ambiance and charm of a tacky wannabe suburban shopping mall?
