Marci Dye spends her days at Sylvan Peak buying and selling outdoor gear. As soon as she can escape, she likes to do just what she's encouraging us to do: get outside and hike, climb, float, slide, glide, or just kick back under a tree. Her columns include everything from good local destinations to lists of the gear to wear when you go there.

"Let's go see if there's any shooting stars yet." I think I said this to my younger children many times this spring, hoping to see a glimpse of spring trying to poke through the snow banks. We all had a very long spring, and you were not alone if you were extremely on edge and feeling claustrophobic due to our lovely weather. The shooting stars (Dodecatheon flowers) were there, they just had to hold out a bit for that snow to melt!

I know what you're thinking: the year's not over yet. Tell you what. If you find a hot item of gear in the next few weeks, I'll write a special article just for your sake. For now, however, here are my favorite picks for outdoor gear for the year 2008. Keep in mind, there's no particular order, no huge bribery by the companies to have their gear mentioned, and sometimes no real technical reason that I liked a certain item, other than just because. But most of the time that's the best reason! I'll try to elaborate a bit, however.

The departure of Outward Bound really got me thinking about what a great segment of Red Lodge it truly was, and how much they are going to be missed. We've learned many things from the crew at Outward Bound, and gained insight on life situations and how to deal with different types of people. Thanks, Outward Bound!

We're all saying it: Where the heck did summer go? Does it always go this fast? Is it because we didn't have much of a spring, so summer was really spring, and then we're looking for summer now? Is it because the kids at our house are not ready for school? Who knows? We had a great summer, though! Fun company came to visit, fun trips in our hills (but never enough), met some great travelers that came in to the store on their journeys, and truly enjoyed the reaction from people when they realized what a cool place we have here.

What do hikers and bikers have in common? Hmmm... It seems there are two sides to that fence, and it's a pretty tall fence. The hiker seeks out solitude and quiet and finds nothing more beautiful than wildflowers and mountain lakes. The biker seeks out the fast-paced fun social gatherings, and takes in one beautiful bike after another. What could these two possibly have in common? GEAR! And really cool gear at that!

This seems to be the time of year when Red Lodge takes off. Maybe it's the mid winter blahs, maybe it's the post-holidays quiet time, maybe it's that we live in an ultimate playground. There's also been a definite increase in the interest in cross-country skiing and snowshoeing with you locals, and now you're off to travel the winter world on your skinny skis. Need some ideas? Put your skis or snowshoes in the car, and let's go!

There are so many active girls in our area. I guess it's the nature of living around Red Lodge! What all do we do? Well, we do it all, of course! Alpine ski, snowboard, tele-ski, cross-country ski, hockey, figure skate, hiking, snowshoe, coffee at the Bikery, lunch at FoLo's, a pint at Sam's, and that's just all in one day. The ultimate Superwoman. Can you imagine?

A non-local customer asked me in the store the other day ?What do you do in Red Lodge all winter? Doesn?t it get to be too long? I mean really, what is there to do around here?? It took me a bit by surprise.
