The Scene, by Jeanne

Jeanne Thomas is a real patron of the performing arts. She has her serious side, promoting the arts around Red Lodge and working to create our own performing arts center; and her lighter side, working as Pippi the Clown. Both sides of Jeanne show in "The Scene," which explores the arts in and around Red Lodge.

Oct 2010: Beartooth Gallery: Visions of the West

by Jeanne Thomas
Beartooth Gallery owners and directors Bob Streitmatter and Robin Galloway are long-time Red Lodge residents and fans. They have lived here since 1993 and opened their Gallery early this year. Jul 2010: Master Potters of the East Rosebud

by Jeanne Thomas
Working with clay and creating things is godlike in so many ways. It is one of the oldest of the art forms and one of the most durable and useful. Pots for cooking, bowls for serving, plates for eating, and cups for drinking: essentials for our lives and easily taken for granted. However when you use household items created by any of these three artists, you will always know and treasure the unique human spirit that imbues every piece. In a sense, one's grasp of life is enriched by the objects themselves and the knowledge of their individual and unique creation.

May 2010: Hail Dionysus! God of Wine and Theater

by Jeanne Thomas
Since this is the libation issue, I was reflecting on Dionysus, the Greek god of both wine and theater, and remembering a production of Euripides' "The Bacchae," performed in the early 1970s in Sarasota, Florida by an enthusiastic cast of college students.

Jan 2010: Jeanne's Word for the Year

by Jeanne Thomas
Now we celebrate the end of the year grown old and the birth of the new year of possibility. The darkness has passed its deepest night and begun the slow increase of the light. Our spirits move in the darkness and we reflect. We wrap ourselves in the warmth of our fires and beds and exult in the long rest and reflections. The stars themselves seem brighter and aspects of our lives seem to both grow worse and darken as well as brighter and more promising upon reflection. Stillness rests our minds and frustrates our ambitions, quiets our restless hearts and stirs the ashes of our desires. Jeanne has plenty of questions, culminating with "Are we generous, both with ourselves and with others?"

Dec 2009: Jean Albus

by Jeanne Thomas
Sometimes when you look at something your heart sings and your spirit soars, and that's how it is with Jean Albus' amazing photographic studies. When you look closely at many of the dresses you can see debris; seeds, stems, leaves, bugs, etc. covering the fabric. Layers of reality. Something buried becomes transcendent, more than itself, more than its journey... illuminated.

Nov 2009: Making a Joyful Noise

by Jeanne Thomas
Our summer has abruptly faded and winter is upon us, with the lovely pure white snows that quickly turn to muddy trackable brown. The work of the harvest is fading and the reflective time of our year is near. We pull on wool socks and sweaters over our trusty long johns. As we relight our stoves and heaters, we become aware of our vulnerability to the season and its quixotic and temperamental changes.

Jul 2009: Mary Ringer: She Walks in Beauty

by Jeanne Thomas
Her presence is simple, harmonious, and comfortable. To be with Mary Ringer is to feel the light of beauty. The contours of her house, the views from her windows, her studio, her deck on the creek, and of course her many passionate works of art, reflect the love she has for life in all its myriad manifestations. So many people told me what a wonderful person she was, that I saw just how many lives she has touched with her self and her art.

Dec 2008: The Red Lodge Performing Arts Center and The Red Lodge Public School Foundation

by Jeanne Thomas
As I drive into town, I feel so proud and excited to see the beautiful new building that is the new high school. I think of all the hard work and divided opinions, fears and concerns, that surrounded this project and how the dedication of a small group of people to provide excellence in education has brought something beautiful and inspiring to Red Lodge. Something that everyone can look at and feel proud of and say, "we did this!"

Sep 2008: Fall Art Classes

by Jeanne Thomas
The importance of an education in the fine arts is hard to quantify, but is clearly far-reaching. It affects every aspect of our lives--from the ability to think and respond creatively in every field and situation, to an enhanced sense of one's self and the meaning in our lives. In addition, of course, to the satisfaction derived from expressing yourself in any artistic medium; be it music, poetry, painting, photography, dance, or theater.

Ours is a town full of artistic enterprise and creativity. Art is celebrated in our businesses, at the Arts Guild, in the theaters and dance halls. Apr 2008: The Red Lodge School of Dance

by Jeanne Thomas
Her face was flushed and excitement permeated the air as Pat Luptak--the Red Lodge School of Dance proprietor and chief instructor--opened the doors for the crows at the first ever Student Works Showcase. Elizabeth Prather, Josylin Luptak, Deanne Duke, and Harold Greer were all struggling to instill some order into the wild enthusiasm bursting from the students who had choreographed their own pieces and would be dancing them tonight in front of a full house. This full house and standing-room-only performance (not unusual for the dance school's events) was held at the Bull & Bear, an historical dance hall and saloon, and long-time partner in the development of the performing arts in Red Lodge.
